2023 NZ Economic Forum
Next up at #NZEF2023 is the panel on governance and democracy, featuring speakers Prof. Al Gillespie (Waikato Uni), Josie Pagani, Ben Guerin and Patrick Crewdson (Stuff). Topics discussed included Ukraine, the rise of populism and the impact of social media. pic.twitter.com/rLZFYKm5lE Josie Pagani: “I think liberal democracy is in real trouble; the last couple of years we’ve seen the worst drop and the lowest levels of democracy seen in 30 years ...it’s collapse could be the defining trend of the 21st century. Of course I’m suggesting we fight back.” Josie Pagani on Ukraine: “Putin was triggered not by an expansion of NATO, but an expansion of democracy. So this is our fight, and they are us.” Josie Pagani: “No-one in a small NZ town said, well I’ve lost my job, but at least aggregate wages have gone up. So the right needs to say something about inequality ... The left need to stop trying to make us better people and go back to trying to make us better off.” Josie Pagani: “40% of NZers have no capital at all; so that’s no tertiary degree or property... but over 90% of people in Parliament have a tertiary degree and property. So our politics has become far less representative and that has to change.”
