When it comes to super, there are only hard choices. Either we make super more affordable for the government, or we prioritise paying for it, as is, above other demands on our wallets. If we had increased the age of eligibility for super from 65 to 67 from 2023 we would today have an extra $4b to spend on reducing child poverty. A quarter of that would pay for free basic dental care for every New Zealander for the rest of their lives. A universal benefit could have replaced a universal benefit.
